What this tutorial covers

A step-by-step walkthrough of the Soil Classification In-Situ form in the EnviroAutomate app. Use this when you're classifying soil that is still in the ground - typically a pit, trench or borehole at the Site you're sampling. Each Take Photos button on this form opens a page where you can take a new photo with the camera or upload one from your device.

Before you start

  • Open the EnviroAutomate app while you have signal so the Site's lookups download.

  • Have your sample bottles, photo-ionisation detector calibration cert and PPE ready.

  • Know the assessment area dimensions you're working in (length, width, depth).

Step 1 - Open the task

  1. Open the EnviroAutomate app and tap Inbox.

  2. Tap your dispatched In-Situ Soil Classification task.

  3. Tap Start Form Task.

Step 2 - Site Details

  1. Confirm Site Name, Project Code and Site Address match the job (these are read-only).

  2. Confirm Assessment Date is correct.

  3. Tap Capture GPS next to Location / GPS to drop your current coordinates.

  4. Tap Take Photos under Calibration Certificates and add the cert for any equipment you used today.

  5. Type the Site Land Use (for example: residential, industrial, agricultural).

  6. For each of the five history questions (potentially contaminated land, industrial / mining / agricultural activities, manufactured chemicals applied, historical PFAS use, soil of unknown origin) tap Yes, No or Unknown.

  7. Under Contaminants of Potential Concern, tap every analyte group that applies (MAH, TPH/TRH, PAH, Heavy Metals, PFAS, Asbestos, VHC, OCP/OPP, Phenols, or Unknown (Full Classification Suite) if you don't know).

Step 3 - Insitu Assessment Area Details

This page captures the dimensions of the assessment area you've opened (e.g. the pit or trench).

  1. Type the Soil Origin Activity (what created the soil you're classifying - e.g. excavation for new foundations).

  2. Tap Waste Origin Code and pick from the list.

  3. Type the Length (m), Width (m) and Classification Depth (m) of the area.

Step 4 - Soil Domain(s) Description

Add one record per visually distinct soil layer (domain) in the pit. Most pits have between 1 and 3 domains.

  1. Tap a Domain Number (1 to 6) for the layer you're describing.

  2. Tap Take Photos under Domain or Soil Photo(s) and add a photo of the soil in this layer.

  3. Tap Soil has been mixed with any wastes? Yes, No or Unknown. If Yes, two extra fields appear: type the Percentage Mixed Wastes? (estimate %) and the Non-soil wastes present (description of what you observed - e.g. timber, plastic, brick).

  4. Tap Was putrescible waste present? Yes or No.

  5. Tap Was there evidence of potential Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM) observed? Yes or No.

  6. Tap Add to record the next domain, then repeat.

Step 5 - Sampling Details

The Sampling Details page contains two subforms. Each opens a dedicated screen where you add one record at a time.

  1. Tap Sampling Details. For every soil sample you collected, tap Add New and record the sample ID, depth, time, sample method and any field observations. Tap Done when the sample is complete; repeat for each sample.

  2. Tap QC Register Details. For every QC sample (duplicate, triplicate, rinsate, blank etc.) tap Add New and fill in the QC type, sample ID and analysing lab. Tap Done; repeat for each QC sample.

Step 6 - Submit

  1. Scroll back to the top of the form and check every required field has a value.

  2. Tap Submit.

After you submit

The submission is matched to the In-Situ Soil Classification fieldwork task in EnviroAutomate. The assessment area, domains and sample list are loaded against the Site, ready for you to add laboratory results when they come in.

Tips

  • Use Save and Exit at the top to pause - your progress is kept under In Progress on the home screen.

  • If you're unsure which contaminants apply, pick Unknown (Full Classification Suite) - the lab will run the full panel.
